HCAPHS comprises core composite measures (e.g., communication with nurses/doctors, staff responsiveness, medication communication, discharge information), individual items (cleanliness, quietness), and global ratings (overall hospital rating, recommendation). Results are reported as top-box, middle-box, and bottom-box scores. “Top-box” reflects the most positive response, like “Always” or “9 or 10".
CMS also publishes HCAHPS Star Ratings—a five-star summary for each measure and an overall "Summary Star Rating"—updated quarterly on Care Compare hcahpsonline.org+1.
